Golf Betting Odds:The Players Championship

Tiger Woods is the favorite at SBG Global.com to win The Players ChampionshiGolf’s so-called fifth major begins on Thursday as The Players Championship gets underway in Florida.  The field is a very good one for this event but two top players will not be playing as world #1 Lee Westwood and #6 Rory McIlroy have decided to skip the event.  Even though he hasn’t won in about a year and a half and has slipped to #8 in the world, Tiger Woods is the favorite at SBG Global.com to win The Players Championship.

It is too bad that Westwood and McIlroy are not in the event but the PGA Tour limits non-members to a certain number of events they can play. Both Westwood and McIlroy have chosen to sit this week out as they are more focused on the upcoming U.S. Open.

The golf odds at SBG favor Tiger Woods but those odds are based on the past reputation of Tiger, not reality. Woods has not won since November of 2009 and it is simply ridiculous for him to be favored to win any event, let alone the Players Championship. And he has not played well in this event anyway with only one win and four top 10’s in 13 trips to TPC Sawgrass.

The two real favorites to win this week are Luke Donald and Phil Mickelson. Each has odds of 14-1 at SBG Global.  Donald has been in the Top 10 in his last six tournaments and he leads the PGA Tour in adjusted scoring average. Mickelson won this event in 2007 and he seems to be rounding into form as he tied for 9th last week at Quail Hollow.

The odds are really wide open after Donald and Mickelson.  Ben Crane is the next choice at 27-1 and you can make a really good case for him winning this week. He has finished in the top six at the Players in each of the past three years. The next three on the odds board are Martin Kaymer, Matt Kuchar and Jim Furyk and of those three Kuchar would seem to have the best chance as he has finished in the top 15 in his last two starts at the Players. Adam Scott is playing well this year and he is 32-1 while Nick Watney, Bubba Watson, K.J. Choi, Hunter Mahan and Padraig Harrington are each 35-1. It is such a talented field this week that there are some very good players who are listed with longshot odds.
