Soccer Odds: MLS All-Stars vs. Chelsea

The 2012 MLS All-Star Game will be played on Wednesday, July 25 at PPL Park in Chester, Pennsylvania. The match features the MLS All-Stars against European giant Chelsea FC. You can find MLS lines, including spreads, moneylines and totals, for the All-Star clash at SBG Global sportsbook.

Major League Soccer used to go with the traditional system for an All-Star game, which pitted players from the two conferences against each other, but the format changed in 2005. Now, an 18-man roster from the league clubs faces an international side.

The MLS All-Stars won the first four matches (2005-2008) against the internationals but the level of competition has elevated significantly since. The All-Stars have gone 0-1-2 against Everton and Manchester United the last three seasons. They lost 5-2 and 4-0 to ManU in the last two years, respectively.

The MLS will be underdogs again on Wednesday. But this certainly won’t feel like another preseason friendly for Chelsea. The All-Stars have a number of accomplished international players as well as some polished Americans.

The All-Stars will be managed by D.C. United’s Ben Olsen. There are 10 clubs represented on the roster. Sporting Kansas City led the way with four selections. David Beckham, Jay DeMerit, Landon Donovan and Thierry Henry are four members that have played against Chelsea in official competition.

The 2012 MLS All-Star Gameday Roster includes:

Goalkeepers - Dan Kennedy (Chivas USA), Jimmy Nielsen (Sporting Kansas City)

Defenders - Steven Beitashour (San Jose Earthquakes), Aurélien Collin (Sporting Kansas City), Ramiro Corrales (San Jose Earthquakes), DeMerit (Vancouver Whitecaps FC), Heath Pearce (New York Red Bulls), Carlos Valdes (Philadelphia Union)

Midfielders - Osvaldo Alonso (Seattle Sounders FC), Beckham (LA Galaxy), Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Dwayne De Rosario (D.C. United), Donovan (LA Galaxy), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City)

Forwards - Henry (New York Red Bulls), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders FC), Chris Pontius (D.C. United), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)

Chelsea FC is managed by Roberto Di Matteo. The Blues are making a U.S. tour after capturing the 2011-12 UEFA Champions League title. They beat Bayern Munich as underdogs via penalty kicks.

Chelsea is competing in the 2012 Herbalife World Football Challenge while in the States. Their first tournament clash came last Wednesday against the Seattle Sounders. The Blues got on the board in the 3rd and 11th minute and finished with a 4-2 result.

Di Matteo utilized a deep rotation in that game and he could elect to do the same against the All-Stars.

“We were looking to get a good workout, get some good possession, some good combination play,” Di Matteo said afterward. “Slowly integrating new players, and also see how some of the younger talents that we have in the club.”

Di Matteo has a loaded club to work with which includes a lot of players that just finished a Euro 2012 stint. The full Chelsea roster looks like this:

Goalkeepers - Peter Cech, Ross Turbull, Henrique Hilário, Jamal Blackman

Defenders - Branislav Ivanovic, Ashley Cole, John Terry, David Luiz, Paulo Ferreira, Gary Cahill, Sam Hutchinson, Todd Kane, Nathaniel Chalobah

Midfielders - Michael Essien, Ramires, Flourent Malouda, Raul Meireles, Frank Lampard, John Mikel Obi, Eden Hazard, Marko Marin, Yossi Benayoun, Josh McEachran, George Saville

Forwards - Gael Kakuta, Fernando Torres, Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne, Lucas Piazon, Patrick Bamford

The 18-year-old Lukaku is a blossoming prospect that’s already scored two goals in the WFC. He and Fernando Torres forge a dangerous forward tandem. Hilario is a quality goalie that has strong defensive players like Frank Lampard and John Terry in front of him.

Chelsea took on Paris Saint-Germain in the first-ever soccer match at the new Yankee Stadium on Sunday night as a leg of the WFC.

Expect Chelsea to control possessions on Wednesday with their superior midfield players. The MLS All-Stars will need to capitalize on defensive counters to come away with goals.

The All-Stars were able to upend Chelsea in this same setting in 2006. Dwayne De Rosario scored in the 70th minute as the home side claimed a 1-0 victory.
